    Lenovo's first smart phone was announced at CES 2010 with a curved slab-form touch screen design and features a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 3.7-inch 480 x 800 AMOLED display with capacitive touch screen, front and rear cameras, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, built-in GPS, with long battery life.

    Powered by the custom-coded version of Google’s Android OS, Lenovo has claimed plans to launch their own "app store" around the device. Lenovo hopes to expand its business in the mobile Internet market thru the release of the LePhone.

    This China Mobile customized handset features tri-band GSM and TD-SCDMA, a 2.4” TFT resistive touch screen, front and rear camera, and external microSD memory slot. Running a China Mobile customized Linux-based OMS operating system which is designed for G3, the 3G brand name for China Mobile, expectations are high for this Chinese-manufactured smartphone.

    The handset supports keying from hard panel or touch screen, and supports pen-writing or finger gesture for touch screen.

Targeted at the higher-end market segment, this Android-based device is priced aggressively and was made available through China Unicom. The ambitious Apanda has set their sights on larger smart phone competitors in not just China, but all over the world.

    Introduced in 2007, E860 is Amoi’s entry into the increasingly popular PDA smart phone market. Using Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 as its operating system, the phone resembles a standard PDA, with directional pads, short cut keys, a side rocker scroll wheel and a stylus.

    As a mobile phone, the E860 is very similar to western handset offerings, supporting dual band GSM 900/1800, 16-channel polyphonic ringtone and GPRS data as well as SMS, MMS, Email and Instant Messaging. With built-in Bluetooth connectivity, easy wireless headset connection is also possible.

    BBK introduced the i268 as an entry level cell phone for those seeking video and MP3 capabilities. Though priced towards the lower end of the market segment, its craftsmanship and visual appeal is very strong with its sleek design and iPod-like controls.

    The i268 is a slider that reveals the number key pad when opened. This device supports dual band GSM 900/1800 with GPRS and features a built-in WAP browser enables basic web-access.

    Released in January 2008, the CECT A380i is a clone of Apple’s popular original iPhone. As a successor to CECT’s earlier product, the P168i, the A380i has improved in quite a few areas.

    In addition to cloning iPhone’s large touch screen, slick form factor and many other cosmetic features, this unit also includes an accelerometer to further imitate the original. At a starting price of $150, the A380i can provide entry-level users with an experience similar to that of a full iPhone.

    Gionee’s S608 stands out to consumers with its distinctive gold-toned rim around the edges. However, the device is more than just its appearance. This China-manufactured device is a dual band GSM phone supporting EDGE connectivity with both a slider design and touch screen.

    Many features are standard, including Java, MP3/MPEG4 playback, FM Radio, Bluetooth and, in lieu of GPS, the S608 is pre-loaded with over 400 maps.

    Haier introduced the U80 as a Touch-Screen multimedia phone that does not fall into the category of Smart Phones. Although its form factor resembles that of an iPhone, it does not make use of any of the popular smart phone Operating Systems. However, many functionalities on smart phones are provided to suffice the need of most average users. Using EDGE as the air interface, the U80 features numerous internet applications like Instant Messenger and weather updates.

    Huawei’s T2211 is an entry level cell phone to the 3G market. It supports the GSM 900/1800 band as well as TD-SCDMA, China’s version of CDMA. In an attempt to promote 3G technology, the T2211 is priced aggressively at under RMB 1000.

    One unique feature on the T2211 is the addition to a 2MP camera at the back, along with a small 0.3 MP camera facing the user enabling 3G video calls similar to Apple’s FaceTime application.

    K-Touch has always been a successful manufacturer of cell phones in the localized Chinese market. The K-Touch V958 is one of the first mobile devices to provide CMMB (China Mobile Media Broadcasting) support, which enables the user to watch television on a cell phone. This device supports dual band GSM, GPRS and WAP 2.0 and features a TFT resistive touch screen.

    In addition to the typical multimedia functions found on most phones, Lenovo distinguished itself by including a set of gaming console emulators such as Game Boy, the original Nintendo, and the Super Nintendo to turn the phone into a handheld retro gaming station.

    Malata introduced the K800 as a business-oriented GSM/EDGE-based PDA phone. It comes with many business features built in despite the lack of a well-known operating system.

    A large 2.9” 320 x 430 TFT touch screen on this device provides ideal high-resolution handwriting recognition, video playback and photography. The touch-based controls of the K800 mimic that of the iPhone.

    Announced in 2008, the Meizu M8 was an early entry for clones of Apple’s popular iPhone. Unlike other cheap knock-offs, the M8 was critically praised by reviewers for its unique functionality and clean design. The M8 is a touch-screen mobile phone based on the Microsoft Windows CE 6 OS with a customized UI similar to that of the iPhone.

    Standard features on this device include dual-band GSM, 8/16GB storage, a 3.4” screen, a 3.2 MP camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack, EDGE/WiFi/Bluetooth support and gravity/light/proximity sensors.

    The WX395 is an entry level GSM phone made by Motorola aggressively aimed at the lower market segment in China. A very affordable handset, with a price of under $75 USD, this bare-bones unit still provides a wide variety of standard functionalities including a music player, a modest 1.3 MP camera, GPRS with WAP 2.0 access and MicroSD expansion card. The WX395 also features Bluetooth with A2DP capability. The design choice of a small form factor and simple display results in incredible standby and talk time.

The unit sticks to the basic functionalities of a cell phone, including a sizeable contact list, loud speakers and an extended battery life. This low cost model is a solid choice for users who are only looking for a means of wireless telephony and nothing more.

    The baseband chipset in this phone is made by VIA Telecom, one of the first non-Qualcomm CDMA solutions.

    Samsung’s W-series is aimed at the top end of the market. The W799 supports both CDMA2000 and GSM and is also capable of using two SIM cards at the same time. In a clam-shell design featuring two full touch-screens on both the outside and interior, the W799 gives the user more control than most handsets on the market. Along with the touch-screens comes Samsung’s proprietary user interface – TouchWiz, which allows users to customize their operating system.
